Hold Fast & Stay True

Having never written a book before, I never imagined how difficult naming one would be. But the purpose of this book is simple: to help people in ministry develop guardrails against the common issues that can cause leaders to struggle—or leave ministry altogether.

Why This Book Was Written

Over the years, I’ve watched friends and colleagues in ministry throw in the towel or be forced out—not because they lacked calling, but because they lacked strategies to deal with the pitfalls almost everyone in ministry faces.

This book is designed to help you avoid those pitfalls and thrive in the ministry God has called you to oversee.

What Does It Mean to “Hold Fast”?

“Hold Fast” is a navigation term used by sailors. It means maintaining a firm grip on the sails—especially during a storm.

Storms at sea are terrifying, and storms in ministry are no different. When I served in Haiti, our mission regularly took teams by boat to the island of Tortuga. One day, a sudden storm appeared out of nowhere.

For hours, we watched as the captain fought to keep the boat on course. Everyone onboard faced fear and uncertainty—but by holding fast, they made it through.

In ministry, storms will come. When they do, we must hold fast to the promises and character of God.

What Does It Mean to “Stay True”?

“Stay True” is a term used in sailing and orienteering. It means continuing in the direction your compass is pointing.

In 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901 was only two degrees off course. That small miscalculation put the plane 28 miles off track—leading to tragic consequences.

In ministry, being slightly off course may not feel dangerous at first. But over time, drifting from God’s direction can lead to serious consequences.

This book helps leaders stay true to the calling God has placed on their lives.
